There exists a child-like essence within the psyche of everyone on this planet. An unseen child with hopes, dreams, fears and anxieties. A child that may find the world very confusing and painful. This child is essentially a part of you that was trying to make sense of everyday life and the complexities of social interaction. This child is commonly referred to as The Inner Child.
The inner child is a concept used in psychology to try to understand the phenomenon of the psyche. People under psychological study often refer back to a very innocent, young part of their personal history when they first experienced a certain trauma, confusion, misunderstanding or loss.
In order to “protect” this inner child, the person will create guiding beliefs and values that, when a difficult/threatening moment is encountered, the belief and/or value will automatically kick in to create an unconscious desired result that will (hopefully) protect and safeguard the person from harm.
